Project Alkali-Silica Reaction

The study of the Alkali-Silica Reaction - RAS

Generalities

Final aim of this research: Development of an accelerated RAS test method for concrete formulations

Interest: International Context (Rilem) – Knowledge of concrete pathologies

Summary

During previous years, the CRIC-OCCN has contributed to improve the knowledge in the field of the Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR), the ways to measure and quantify it

In the first phase, the reactivity of European aggregates with a specific cement chosen for its high and constant alkali content has been studied (European Project Partner).

In the second phase, the maximal quantity of alkali, that can be accepted in cements in contact with a reactive granulate has been evaluated. This work has enabled to establish certain limit values of the norm NBN B12-109 that defines the maximum values of each type of Belgian cements to be defined as Low Alkali (LA).

A new study group of Rilem, for which the participation of the Research Department has been requested, ha been formed for evaluating the RAS test methods. The CRIC-OCCN has mentioned its interest to participate to the group that develops and validates one (or more) accelerated test method(s) in order to determine the disposition of certain concrete formulations (including these with recycled granulates) to develop the RAS (TC ACS – P).
