Project Valorisation of MSWI

Valorisation of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ashes and Air Pollution Control (APC) residues in cementitious materials - Tefracem

Generalities

Final aim of this research: Valorise the MSWI of the Brussels incinerator

Interest: Normative - General expertise of the chemistry of hydraulic binders and concrete

Summary

The project « Tefracem » (Tefra = fly ash in Greek) has been introduced at the Brussels Region with two Applied Sciences Departments of the Free University of Brussels, ULB (BATir, Professor S. Staquet and CREA-SURF, Professor M. Degrez) within the framework of the Impulse Programme – Environment call 2008.

The aim of this research is to valorise the residues of the Neder-Over-Hembeek incinerator in construction materials; more precisely, the project foresees to treat the fly ashes and the residues obtained from the purification of the incinerator outlet gasses and add these materials to the cement as a hydraulic binder (mineral addition of type II) or, if necessary, to use them as an inert filler as sand in concrete.

This research started in 2009.

The CRIC-OCCN will deal essentially with the following tests:

- the characterization of MSWI and the study of the reproducibility of their elementary chemical properties during their production;

- the study of their eventual incorporation in cements;

− the leaching of MSWI before and after treatment;

− the leaching on the final products (concrete);

− the durability of these new concretes.
